  1. Lyin' Eyes - The Eagles

A good way to see how chord extensions can effect the style and feel of a song is to look as some examples. Starting with Lyin' Eyes by The Eagles, we'll go through a range of songs that make good use of 7th chords in different ways.

Lyin' Eyes (The Eagles) - Section 1

Things to listen for if you have this track:

  • Listen to how the 7th chords add colour to the chord sequence. For comparison play the chord sequence below which is the same but with the 7th chords omitted. You might find that the version without the 7ths sounds bare by comparison.

Lyin' Eyes (The Eagles) - Section 1 no 7ths

  • Listen to the prominence of the acoustic guitar part throughout the track and notice that the part is doubled on another guitar. Doubling the strumming pattern helps to bring ‘depth’ to the sound of the track.
